Essential Budgeting Tips for the Recent College Grad
Create a practical spending plan for housing, everyday expenses, and home essentials after graduation.

Graduation can bring new expenses along with new opportunities. Writing down what you expect to spend can help you make practical choices as your routine changes.
Start with what you know
List your take-home income and regular expenses. Include housing, utilities, transportation, food, insurance, and payments you already owe. If a figure is uncertain, label it as an estimate and update it when you have better information.
Plan around the income you can reasonably rely on rather than a job offer or raise you have not received. Leave room for expenses that do not happen every month.
Prioritize home essentials
Decide what you need to make your home functional and what can wait. Check what you already own before buying new furniture, appliances, or electronics. Measure your space and compare the full cost, including delivery or installation.
Review new commitments carefully
Before agreeing to a payment option, read the payment schedule and the total amount you would pay under it. Compare that with the cash price and other available options. Ask about charges, ownership conditions, and any available purchase options.
Lease-purchase is different from buying outright. Approval is not guaranteed, and you should not assume any payment option will preserve or improve your credit score.
Keep your plan current
Revisit your spending plan when your income, rent, transportation, or household needs change. Keep copies of agreements and payment information so you know where to ask questions.
